The history of the company dates back to the 18th century, unattainable for the automotive industry. MAN SE, and more specifically Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, is a joint-stock company with headquarters in Munich. It is one of the leading companies producing trucks, buses, engines and industrial equipment under the MAN brand.

The history of the MAN brand

The history of the MAN brand dates back to 1893, when the inventor of the Diesel engine Rudolf Diesel entered into a deal with the machinery plant in Augsburg. A year later, a prototype was created, which was perfected over the next few years. The first engines were used to drive production equipment in industry. To increase production, the “Society for Machine Building in Nuremberg” merged with the “Machine Factory in Augsburg”. The Maschinenfabrik Augsburg – Nürnberg company was founded (in short MAN). As the first in the world (from 1897) it produced diesel engines (with power from 20 HP upwards). The largest engines were powered by warships, for example the battleship “Prinzregent Luitpold”. In 1922, Bosch developed and started to produce an injection pump for a diesel engine. In 1923, the first MAN truck was driven by a diesel engine. The serial production was launched in 1925. In the 20s and 30s, licenses for the production of diesel engines were bought by many car manufacturers. After the Second World War, it was also done by companies from socialist countries.

Currently, MAN Truck & Bus based in Munich is the largest enterprise of the MAN Group. The company has its factories, among others in Poland. They are located in the vicinity of Poznań and Starachowice. They produce buses.
